Tom Russell has a new album called “Old Songs Yet to Sing.” If you guessed from the title that it was a collection of some songs from Tom’s back catalogue, you’d be right. If I were to put together a list of songs for Russell to revisit it would look very much like the track list of this recording. The big surprise is that it’s all acoustic. Just Tom and, bigger surprise, his old partner Andrew Hardin!
You can argue whether Del McCoury is the best Bluegrass singer of all time, but no one will argue that he’s not the best current Bluegrass singer. As much as I’ve enjoyed his recent adventurous work (like his version of Richard Thompson’s “Vincent Black Lightning”) but there ain’t nothin’ better than Del taking on a real Bluegrass style song.
